MONTE VISTA, Colo. (KNX) — A Colorado girl was shot and killed while making TikTok videos in her home earlier this month, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The warrant, obtained and reviewed by KRDO, said that the victim was dancing with two other minors when she was fatally shot by a Glock 19 pistol on Aug. 7 in Monte Vista.
The incident has resulted in three suspects being arrested in relation to the shooting, two of whom are teen girls.
According to the affidavit, one of the girls who was arrested reportedly told police that she witnessed the other suspect point and shoot the victim and then toss the gun on a bed nearby. But, when police asked the suspect if it was intentional, she said, "it could be [an] accident."
The gun was reportedly legally owned by one of the suspect's boyfriends, 21-year-old Emiliano Vargas, according to the affidavit. While the three were making their video, the suspect showed the gun to the other two.
Vargas was charged with permitting or providing a minor with a firearm, and the two teens, who have not been identified, were charged with reckless manslaughter and possession of a handgun by juveniles, Monte Vista police shared.
The victim has been identified as Aaliyah Salazar, a 14-year-old, 9 News reported. Salazar's family shared with the station their frustration over the minors only facing a maximum sentence of six years.
"The frustration I've got with that is if you take a life, you should have to pay for it dearly," grandfather Gary Salazar told 9 News. "Not with a slap on the hand and say don't do it again."
The final moments before the shooting were recorded in a TikTok video. In it, Salazar can be seen dancing while someone in the background is "fiddling with something on the bed," according to the affidavit.
When the shooting occurred, Vargas was not home, though he lives in the house owned by his grandmother with his 17-year-old girlfriend, the affidavit says.
After the shooting, police located the weapon and the victim in the same room, but it is not believed she shot herself, the affidavit said.
