San Francisco, Calif. (KNX) - A Bay Area security guard for a local news station is being mourned after he died from injuries he received from protecting a news reporter in an attempted robbery.

KRON4 said security guard Kevin Nishita was with a reporter Wednesday afternoon in Oakland covering a robbery that occurred recent. Someone attempted to steal the news equipment and shot Nishita in the upper abdomen.

Nishita was taken to Highland Hospital where it was initially reported that he was in stable condition and was expected to be ok.

But on Saturday morning, the news station announced Nishita died from injuries he sustained.

Many of the station’s members took to Twitter to remember their beloved security guard.

“He was our friend,” reporter Will Tran wrote. “He was an officer and a gentleman in every sense of the word. I literally texted him yesterday telling him if needs anything let me know. This isn’t fair.”

“Kevin was genuine, humble and always did the job with a smile on his face,” reporter Camila Barco wrote. “He was our private security guard that kept our team and numerous other Bay Area reporters safe while our in the field. Kevin will be missed.”

Oakland Police Department tweeted a picture Saturday of the car they believe was involved.

Initially, the reward for information regarding the case was set at $27,500, but it was increased to $32,500.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at (510) 238-3426.
