OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) — A security guard with a local television news crew has been shot during an attempted robbery in downtown Oakland.
The incident happened at 12:20 p.m. at 14th and Webster Street.
The victim is "being worked on" but is expected to be "okay," Oakland police told KCBS Radio's Bob Butler. Responding officers "found at least a man conscious and breathing and suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper abdomen," as first reported by the East Bay Times.
He was taken to nearby Highland Hospital. He's in stable condition.
KCBS Radio has learned the crew was from KRON, information later verified by the station. The unidentified journalists were doing a story about an overnight retail robbery at nearby Prime 356 when a vehicle pulled up, a suspect or suspects got out and tried to rob the crew of their camera. Witnesses reported multiple gunshots.
KCBS Radio has reached out to KRON for comment but has not yet heard back. It wasn't immediately clear if any arrests have been made.
The security guard is employed by Oakland-based Star Protection Agency. The company provides security for Bay Area TV stations, a common sight following a recent uptick in violent run-ins for local TV news crews.
The Prime 356 incident – the latest in a challenging year for Oakland – comes during a recent spate of smash-and-grab robberies plaguing the Bay Area. Police have also been investigating a series of weekend attempted robberies at Oakland pot dispensaries – some of which resulted in gunfire.
