Police received a call shortly after 5 a.m. Monday from a woman claiming she had just been stabbed at the 2600 block of Jones Road. The victim, identified as 74-year-old Darlene Roth, was transported to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Authorities identified the suspect as the victim's son, Nicholas Roth.

The San Jose Mercury News revealed that Roth is a part time sports reporter for the Bay Area News Group, the company which owns the paper. Police said that Roth is 41-years-old, though the Mercury News reported he is 39.

In addition to murder, prosecutors also charged Roth with elder abuse.

He's currently being held at Contra Costa County jail in Martinez on a no-bail hold. According to the paper, this is the fourth murder in Walnut Creek this year, while none were reported in 2019 or 2020.
