ARCATA, Calif. (KLUV) - Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, California is facing a dire problem: they’re running out of room to house all their students.

There simply is not enough space to construct another dorm…on land that is.

Because of the lack of available housing near the campus, local officials have been working with the university and state regulatory agencies to explore the possibility of housing students in a multi-story residential barge docked in Humboldt Bay eight miles from campus.

Cal Poly Humboldt Communications Specialist Grant Scott-Goforth said in an emailed response to questions from the Lost Coast Outpost, “The idea of floating apartments or studios is one of many possibilities the University has been exploring.

“This is very preliminary at this point and the university does not have further details to share.”

The Bibby Renaissance is among several floating barges that have the dimensions and capacity to house students, though not everyone is so keen on the idea.

At least one student at a recent protest objected to the idea, holding up a sign telling Cal Poly Humboldt President Tom Jackson, “Hey Tom! Don’t put us on a “f*****g prison boat!”
