Denton County Courthouse unveils plaque honoring former slave turned janitor

Denton (1080 KRLD) - The Denton County Office of History and Culture unveiled the plaque today in honor of a former slave turned beloved janitor Zach Rawlings.

Born in Mississippi, Rawlings was brought to Lewisville in 1860 as a slave. Once free, he established a cemetery for African Americans and a school for African American children. In 1886 Rawlings became the custodian for the Denton County Courthouse and, according to county historian Peggy Riddle, he was well-loved and respected by the community.

Uncle Zach worked as the courthouse custodian until his death in 1911. The plaque honoring his memory is now displayed in the Denton Courthouse on the Square.
