A new report looks into police racial profiling in Texas. The annual data analysis was released by Dr. Alex del Carmen of Tarleton State University and the A&M University System. It was done in accordance with provisions in the Sandra Bland Act.

Some key findings from the Institute for Predictive Analytics in Criminal Justice: The Texas Department of Public Safety reported the most stops (1,687,895) in 2021 | The Houston Police Department (203,671) and Harris County Sheriff’s Office (131,816) represent the next two largest number of stops in 2021.

This data helps provide the legislature and law enforcement agencies with recommendations for further improvements.

Hispanics were most likely to be stopped for law violations (43%). Both Hispanics and Whites were nearly equally likely to be stopped for pre-existing knowledge. Whites were most likely to be stopped for moving traffic violations. Whites were more likely to be stopped for vehicle traffic violations.

Less than 1% of stops involved use of physical force. When force was applied, Whites were most likely involved (37%).

KRLD's John Liddle talked with Dr. Alex del Carmen from Tarleton State about the importance of the study and what's next.
