If you have a teen looking for a summer job, the City of Plano has the "help wanted" sign out.

With just over a month to go before prime swimming season, the City of Plano still needs many lifeguards to staff city pools.

"We do have a shortage of roughly 100 lifeguards that we're in need of," said Susie Hergenrader, recreation services manager for the City of Plano. "And we're not alone - most cities across the United States are in the same boat."

There are very few prerequisites.

"You just need to be 15 years (old) or older, be a strong swimmer, and have an interest in lifeguarding," Hergenrader said.

Lifeguards will need to be trained and certified - but the city provides all of that.

"We can go ahead and get you all the training (and) all the certifications you need free of charge," Hergenrader said, "and we'll also provide the uniform as well."

As for how much the job pays, "lifeguards start at $13.51 (an hour)," Hergenrader said, "and our head lifeguards start at $14.90 an hour."

And the experience is priceless.

"To be a lifeguard, you must be disciplined (and) you must be dedicated," Hergenrader said. "You learn those on-the-job skills that carry over and translate to any other position they have in the future."
