A driver who fled from police after a traffic stop on Monday is charged with murder after police say he slammed into another car, killing a woman and injuring her 10-year-old son.
Police had pulled over a Honda Accord for a traffic stop Monday afternoon near Shiloh and Northwest Highway. Police say it was being driven by 37-year-old Bobby Lee Murphy of Oklahoma and that several other people were also in the vehicle.
When officers found evidence there were also illegal drugs in the car, they say Murphy sped off. The original officers lost sight of his vehicle near Axe Drive and Garland Avenue, but other officers in the vicinity spotted the vehicle speeding through the neighborhood.
An officer near Garland Avenue and Miller Road tried to alert drivers of the oncoming vehicle by activating the lights and sirens on his patrol car. Police say the Honda Accord ran a red light at that intersection and slammed into a silver Toyota and a Honda CRV.
Two people were inside the silver Toyota. 28-year-old Karla Rico was killed in the crash. Her 10-year-old son, identified by relatives as Matthew Santos, suffered serious injuries. He's being treated at a hospital in Dallas.
Murphy is charged with murder and with evading arrest causing serious bodily injury. He's currently hospitalized for injuries he suffered in the collision. Police say he will be turned over to the custody of Dallas County after he's discharged.
