Respiratory illness RSV hitting North Texas children hard, and earlier this year

A respiratory virus that normally hits children hard in the Fall and Winter seems be blooming early this year.

In adults, respiratory syncytial virus - RSV - is mainly a case of a cough and a runny nose. But in infants and toddlers, it can get in the lungs and cause real problems.

Children's Medical Center in Dallas has had more than 120 cases so far this year while Cook Children's in Fort Worth has had almost 100.

Babies and small children can get symptoms like congestion, labored breathing, wheezing, fever and a persistent cough.

Last year, RSV practically disappeared because of mask wearing and social distancing due to Coronavirus. Now, with things opening up again, RSV is back.
