Summer heat puts North Texans in hospital, keeps ambulance crews on toes

As predicted, it was a busy weekend for MedStar crews responding to heat-related emergencies.

"A lot of people aren't accustomed to the heat yet and might not be taking it seriously," said MedStar Chief Transformation Officer Matt Zavadsky. "All in all, we responded to 16 heat-related calls over the weekend."

Of those, 12 people had to be taken to the hospital-- two of them in critical condition.

To avoid heat-related sickness as the summer drags on, Zavadsky said there are a few precautions you can take: Stay hydrated, stay inside if you can, and wear light colored, loose-fitting clothes. He said you also need to check in on your loved ones, especially if they’re senior citizens.

"We do anticipate that this heat related call volume will continue, but we're hoping not necessarily at the same level," Zavadsky said, adding that the hope is that people start following the recommendations issued by health officials. "We are very concerned about what this prolonged heat might do to some of the residents of our community."
