As North Texas students prepare to return to school in just a few weeks, fewer and fewer teachers are doing the same. School districts around the state are still looking for educators in late July.

"The pandemic, of course, change the course of life for so many," said Rena Honea, president of Alliance AFT in Dallas. "And especially for our educational world having to go to online learning, teachers having to balance online and in classroom at the same time, for no additional money."

Those added responsibilities, stagnating pay and increasing workloads are just a few of the reasons so many teachers say they're leaving the classroom.

"I hope it's not a trend. I want to stay optimistic because even though I left the profession, I really believe that we need good people teaching our students and our future generations," former Grapevine-Colleyville ISD teacher Laura Hunt said. "But I don't see this changing until changes happen with legislation."
