Austin ISD canceled classes at Travis Early College High School on Thursday after a girl, believed to be 15-20 years old, was found dead behind the campus, district officials say.

Two campus employees alerted an Austin ISD police officer at 7:39 a.m. Thursday when they discovered the girl hanging from a tree behind the campus, Austin ISD officials said.

AISD officials said the campus was immediately placed on "secure" status, but later announced there was no danger to students or staff at the South Austin campus.

While the young woman did not have identification on her, medics estimated she was between 15 and 20 years old.

"Right now, our focus is in supporting our students and staff," Austin ISD interim Superintendent Marias Segura said at a Thursday morning press conference. "Many of us are hurting and want to figure out how to support them better. Over the next several hours we'll begin to work through what it will look like tomorrow for students and staff. Those plans have not been finalized."

Students who were already on buses would be returned home; for students already on campus, the district was working to coordinate transportation, according to Talk1370 in Austin, a sister station to 1080 KRLD.

The disruption comes during back-to-school week for students across AISD, who returned to classes for the fall semester on Monday.
