PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Rowan University Profs are anxious to get back out on the football field after losing their 2020 season to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, Rowan went 4-6 (4-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference), but four of their losses were by 10 points or fewer.

Rowan Head Coach Jay Accorsi breaks down some of the strengths on the Profs’ roster.

“The offensive line, we have a lot of players returning from that position, which we knew that was going to be the strength of the team," said Accorsi.

"Returning quarterback in Mike Husni, anytime you have that at the trigger position, you’re going to feel more comfortable than with somebody you don’t know. On the defensive side, a couple of linebackers and defensive backs that we feel comfortable about.”

Accorsi added there is one position that could hold a real key to success for the Profs in 2021, if the group hits close to its ceiling.

“I think it’s the wide receiver group,” Accorsi said.

“I think there are a lot of new players at that position. We’re extremely young at that position, compared to all the other positions. They are lead by John Maldonado, who was elected captain, who had a really breakout year in 2019 for us. It’s his work ethic and how he comes every day to practice and works in everything that he does that I think has permeated through the rest of that group. There are some really good players in there. It’s going to be interesting to see how that group develops.”

Maldonado had 31 catches for 468 yards and two touchdowns in 2019.

Rowan will open its season at home on Saturday night, September 4 against Widener.
