PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are searching for the individual or individuals who fired more than 40 shots at a man and woman from a very close range in Frankford early Wednesday morning.

The woman was killed. The man is in critical condition.

Police have not yet identified the woman but said she was in her 40s. She was shot eight times throughout her chest and thighs. She died at the hospital. The man, also in his 40s, was shot twice in the head.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. on Buckius Street, near Kensington Avenue.

Investigators found 40 spent shell casings that all appear to be of the same caliber, but they don’t yet know if they were fired from the same gun.

“Preliminarily, it appears that they are of the same caliber,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “However, we don’t know if there was more than one shooter. With over 40 spent shell casings, it’s very possible that there was more than one gun fired, but we’re not sure this time.”

Most of the spent shell casings were found feet away from the victims’ bodies, he added.

Two people were seen fleeing. Witnesses spotted two Jeeps leaving the scene shortly after the shooting — one was dark gray, the other black.

Investigators are looking at surveillance video from nearby businesses to try to get a license plate number.
