60-year-old man shot, killed in apparent carjacking in Rhawnhurst

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 60-year-old man was shot and killed in Rhawnhurst in an apparent carjacking, police say.

Investigators say it happened around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday in a driveway behind an Afton Street home, not far from Glendale Avenue.

George Briscella was driving a gray or silver 2020 Toyota Rav 4 that had temporary tags. Nearby surveillance video shows three men walking down the driveway before three gunshots are heard. Police say the suspects got away with the car.

Briscella was hit once in his stomach and died a short time later at the hospital.

“This wasn’t an instance where he had been followed to that location,” said Homicide Capt. Jason Smith. “At least we don’t believe that’s the case because of the lapse in time.”

According to police, video shows the car speeding away from the scene.

Investigators say certain groups of carjackers may be targeting newer types of cars, possibly with a focus on Toyota Highlanders.

“You’ll see some carjackers, they’ll just take whatever is available to them,” Smith said. “They do tend to focus on newer model vehicles.”

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information or surveillance video of the suspects is asked to contact the police department at 215-686-8477.
