PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was abducted as three masked gunmen allegedly held his family hostage over the weekend, while Philadelphia police said he was forced to take out a significant amount of cash.
Police said this started Friday afternoon when a 45-year-old man was abducted by what police are calling a criminal gang.
Investigators believe he was kidnapped from in front of his home on Decatur Street in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia.
"The only description we have at this point is three black males wearing masks and gloves, possibly in their 20s," said Northeast Detectives Division Capt. Jack Ryan.
The three men, armed with guns, then invaded the man's home.
"They held members of the family hostage in the house over the weekend, while other criminal actors were engaged in forcing the complainant from withdrawing money from various banks," said Ryan.
The family members held hostage included the victim's wife and 10-month-old son, the man's 68-year-old father, and a friend of his wife.
Police said the captors released the man Sunday, which is when police were called and the investigation started.
Ryan said one of the victims was tortured and was treated at the hospital, but there were no other injuries. The others in the group were physically unharmed.
Investigators added that there was some involvement of a Philadelphia casino at one point, but the role of it remains unclear.
"There's lots of video all over the place. We're all well aware, and we're working on collecting that and tracking it down now," said Ryan.
As of early Monday evening, the three masked men were still at large.
