Restaurant industry advocates support Philly COVID-19 vaccine mandate — with reservations

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — In about three weeks, proof of vaccination against COVID-19 will be required for anyone going out to eat or drink in bars, restaurants and other such establishments in Philadelphia. There is support among industry advocates — and also some questions and concerns about the city's new mandate for venues that serve food indoors.

One concern expressed by the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association is the financial impact on bars and restaurants that are still trying to recover from the economic nosedive of the pandemic last year.

Another question: What will enforcement look like? A PRLA spokesman says they are looking to the city for resources to help restaurant workers avoid difficult customer confrontations.

There are also questions about arenas and stadiums. If someone already has a ticket for a game or a show set for 2022 and they don't want to get vaccinated, will they be able to get a refund? Will athletes who are unvaccinated be allowed to play in the arena?

The mandate goes into effect on Jan. 3. For the first two weeks, a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken less than 24 hours prior will be accepted in lieu of proof of vaccination. But Starting Jan. 17, bars, restaurants and the like can allow entry only to people who have proof of being fully vaccinated.
