Philly father dies in front of 3-year-old son, also shot, among torrent of weekend shootings

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As a surge of gun violence continues to plague Philadelphia, more than a dozen people were shot over the weekend, including a 3-year-old and 14-year-old.

The toddler was witness to his own father being shot and killed.

Police arrived at 55th Street and Lansdowne Avenue in West Philadelphia on Saturday, finding Raquane Wright and Evan Baylor, both 23, shot several times throughout their bodies, lying in the street. They were taken to the hospital where they later died.

Wright’s 3-year-old son, who had been shot in both legs, was in the arms of a bystander. He is expected to make a physical recovery.

In a separate shooting, a 14-year-old was shot twice in the left thigh on Seltzer Street near 26th Street in North Philadelphia, along with an 18-year-old who was shot in the back.

Another 18-year-old narrowly escaped a bullet to the back of the head Saturday night in West Philadelphia, during another triple shooting which injured a 21-year-old man and 36-year-old woman.

There were three separate triple shootings over the weekend.

Philadelphia is reckoning with 100 more homicides so far in 2021 than by this date just two years ago. The city had 259 homicides as of late Monday afternoon.
