PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Father's Day in Philadelphia began in tragedy as a third triple shooting in two days left one man dead and two women wounded.
Around 2:30 Sunday morning in North Philadelphia, police said the ground was littered with shell casings after a man was fatally shot in the head on the corner of 27th Street and Montgomery Avenue. Two women were also struck, but suffered only minor injuries.
This came after a pair of triple shootings that happened just blocks from each other Saturday. The first saw two men killed and a three-year-old boy wounded on 55th Street near Lansdowne Avenue in the afternoon.
Hours after that, police said gunmen fired more than 50 shots at a crowd of over two dozen at a graduation party on Lansdowne Avenue near 59th Street, just before 7:30 p.m. Three people - a 36-year-old woman and two men, ages 18 and 21 - were wounded and taken to area hospitals, where they were placed in stable condition.
A weapon hasn't been recovered in that shooting, though an arrest was made.
In a statement Saturday, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw called acts of gun violence "tragic," but those against children "especially disturbing and sickening."
She added, "While holiday celebrations will continue throughout the city, our investigators will work tirelessly to bring justice to all of those affected by the scourge of gun violence."
