PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An Uber driver is in critical condition after he was shot through the rear window of his SUV in North Philadelphia.
Around 11:30 Wednesday night near 13th Street and Lehigh Avenue — about five blocks north of Temple’s campus — a bullet shattered the rear windshield and tore through the headrests on the driver’s side of the SUV, striking the 34-year-old driver in the head.
An 18-year-old passenger had only been in the car for a few minutes when she heard gunshots.
“She’s extremely lucky because she was missed by getting struck by gunfire by just a few inches because she was in the backseat of this small SUV,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
The car kept going, crashing at Broad Street and Lehigh Avenue.

“The Uber continued westbound, crossed over Broad Street, jumped the curb and struck the utility pole,” said Small. “That’s when police arrived on location and they realized that the 34-year-old Uber driver was struck in the head.”
Officers found six spent shell casings at 13th and Lehigh. The car was only struck by a single bullet.
The passenger told police no argument or road rage lead up to the shooting.
The driver remains in critical condition at the hospital.
No arrests have been made.
