PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia man was found guilty in a hit-and-run case that left three people seriously injured in West Philadelphia last year.
Andre Shuford was found guilty Wednesday on more than a dozen of the 20 charges he was facing, including aggravated assault by vehicle, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
Judge Donna Woelpper handed down the sentence after Shuford waived his right to a jury trial.
On Sept. 2, 2022, Shaheed Richburg picked up his nieces and nephew – then 5-year-old Divinity, her 3-year-old sister Esence McFarland, and their 1-year-old brother – from day care and was walking them to go eat at McDonald’s in the area of 56th and Vine streets when they were hit head-on by a truck before it drove off.
Richburg, Divinity, now 6, and McFarland, now 4, were seriously injured. Their brother, who was in a stroller at the time, was pushed out of the way and avoided serious injury.
Richburg’s pelvis and both of his legs were broken. He also suffered a head injury and other injuries from which he is still recovering.
Divinity spent six months in the hospital for a traumatic brain injury, had to relearn how to talk, and will have to repeat kindergarten.
Shuford is scheduled to be sentenced in October.
Hit and runs in Philadelphia reached an all-time high in 2022, with the number of fatalities doubling the level in 2019, according to data from the bicycle coalition.
