HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- Astros pitcher Jose Urquidy left his start on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Phillies due to right shoulder soreness.
Urquidy summoned a trainer to the mound after missing badly on a 1-0 changeup to Nick Castellanos on his 84th pitch of the night, but Astros catcher Martín Maldonado could sense trouble a couple of pitches prior when he hit Kyle Schwarber with a 2-2 fastball.
"I saw on the hit by pitch, he kind of yanked it," Maldonado said. "Then, on the next pitch I called a sinker in, and he threw it way outside. That was a sign."
Upon leaving the game, Urquidy went through a myriad of tests, but the Astros don't expect to know the extent of the injury, which he said was in the back of his shoulder, until Monday.
"I felt a little bit of pain in my shoulder," Urquidy said. "On the last pitch, I was trying to throw a sinker, and I felt a little something in my shoulder, so I decided to stop."
Shoulder issues forced Urquidy to the IL on two different occasions during the 2021 season, but the Astros right-hander said what took him off the mound Sunday was "nothing like that".
Before leaving the game, Urquidy limited the Phillies to two runs on three hits over 5.1 innings, which earned him his third win of the season. His ERA is 5.20 through his first six starts of 2023.
