It seems as though every day, there's some new element to the James Harden story in Houston, a story that certainly feels as though it will only end in one way: with the Rockets moving on from their once-in-a-generation talent.

Between missing the start of camp and potentially flouting COVID protocols while doing so, dodging questions from reporters about his current state of mind, getting made fun of for his physique when he finally did show up and causing NBA fans to question the culture in Houston, there's certainly been a lot that has been thrown our way. And not a lot of it is encouraging for Rockets fans.

The latest piece of news comes from NBA insider Shams Charania, who was told by sources that Harden has had "multiple verbal confrontations" during team practices with different teammates. One of these became so heated that it led to Harden throwing a basketball in the direction of rookie teammate Jae'Sean Tate, who spent his 2019-20 campaign playing for the Sydney Kings in the NBL Australia. The ball did not hit Tate — whether this is because Harden missed or never meant to intentionally hit his teammate is not clear.

While Charania notes that practices can get heated, and it's not always a bad thing if they do considering successful teams need that type of drive, this particular incident came as a surprise to many in the organization who know Harden as a "laid-back and calm personality." This outlash is part of an "uncharacteristic level of frustration" that has surfaced due to his situation. He wants out, and acquisitions of John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and Christian Woods haven't changed that.

Charania also draws comparisons to the Timberwolves' 2018 situation involving disgruntled star Jimmy Butler that eventually led to his trade to Philadelphia, though Butler's personality means that some of his behavior was more expected than what we're seeing from Harden.

Coincidentally, the 76ers are front runners in this scenario as well, though new GM Daryl Morey has made it clear that they do not want to move Ben Simmons in any deal. Should both teams struggle early on, we'll see if that mentality changes. The Nets are another team of note, and while teams such as the Heat and Mavericks could make a move, reports indicated that neither is interested in doing so.

However, given the tension in Houston based on Charania's report, we may not get to see whether or not the Rockets struggle. Harden's last days in Houston may not be ahead of him... they may be right now.

On the bright side, Cherania says that Harden has been described as "engaged and encouraging" toward his teammates during the preseason games, and he's looked pretty good on the floor as well.
