Deshaun Watson says he made decision to return after missing play in blowout loss to Bears

(SportsRadio 610) -- For some, it was a bit unnerving to see Deshaun Watson still in the game after missing a play to have his right arm examined on the sideline.

This, especially considering the Texans were never really competitive against the Bears, who drubbed them 36-7 on Sunday.

With just over two minutes left in the third quarter, and the Texans already trailing 33-7, Watson was hit on the elbow as he threw the ball. He laid on the ground for some time, then was substituted out of the game for A.J. McCarron, who was sacked on the next play.

Watson returned to finish the game, despite it seemingly being out of reach, and the offensive line's inability to protect him.

The quarterback said it was his own decision to continue playing. And even with the team officially eliminated from postseason contention, Watson does not plan on mailing it in.

"I'm going to play," Watson said when asked if there should be a bigger picture conversation on how much more he plays this season. "That's my job. I've got to be out there every game. I'm not looking forward to throwing the book of vacation right now.

"We've got three more games. I've got too much pride and respect for myself and this organization and this team to go out there and just get embarrassed again or lose. My job is to go out there and play to the fullest and try to get these Ws."

Interim head coach Romeo Crennel also defended the decision to continue playing Watson on Sunday, reminding reporters the name of the game.

"Well, hey, this game is called football, and there are hard hits that occur in the game," Crennel said. "When you're at the quarterback, you're going to take some of them.

"We decided to leave him in the game and let him finish the game."
