It appears as if many fans' expectation is a reality, as WaPo's Nicki Jhabvala Tweeted Wednesday that per sources, the Commanders will not pick up Chase Young's fifth-year option.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero has also reported the news as well.
Young was selected No. 2 overall in 2020 and won the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year Award after recording 7.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles in 15 games, but he tore his ACL in November 2021 and played just 12 games between 2021-22 – including three last year – and recorded just 1.5 sacks in those games.
Said fifth-year option would have paid Young $17.45 million in 2024, but instead, he will be a free agent after this season – although he could be franchise tagged, a designation that would cost the Commanders a couple extra million dollars depending on where it lands next offseason.
