Chris Cooley, who was voted one of the greatest players in the 90-year history of the Washington football franchise, will not attend the ceremony honoring him at FedEx Field because he does not want to be involved with the organization at this time.
Cooley revealed this during his appearance on “The Kevin Sheehan Show” podcast this week.
Here is the exchange between the former Washington tight end and Sheehan (beginning at 59:45 in the above audio player) lightly edited for clarity:
Kevin Sheehan: By the way, you know that you’re one of the 10 additional, we haven’t talked about that. I can’t believe we haven’t talked about that, you got named as one of the 10, I mean that was a given, and are now one of the 90 greatest Redskins of all time. Are you gonna come for that celebration?
Chris Cooley: Uh-uh.
Sheehan: So when they hold this ceremony to announce the next 10 for the 90 greatest, you’re not gonna be there for it?
Cooley: No
Sheehan: Why?
Cooley: I don’t want to.
Sheehan: Ok, should I not ask anymore?
Cooley: That’s why.
Sheehan: I know. Alright, are we done with this conversation…
Cooley: I don’t have any interest in doing this… I’m very appreciative of being voted in and I’m very appreciative of my time when I was there with the Washington Redskins. At this point, I don’t have a lot of desire to be involved with the Washington Commanders. It’s not the team name that does it.
Sheehan: And you’re very appreciative of all of the fans that voted for you.
Cooley: Yeah, very appreciative. And I feel for all of the fans for where they’re at and I still appreciate the people that are still fans, that are still diehards. Because you know very well, as much as me, even at times of maybe you find yourself almost rooting against them, it’s still the only game you’re rooting…. There’s no other team. My only interest is still Washington. I just don’t know if my interest is if it’s to win or lose.
