The Commanders will be without the services of defensive end Shaka Toney for at least next season, as Toney was one of five players suspended by the NFL on Friday for violations of the league’s gambling policy.
Per the NFL release, Toney and four Lions – Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore, Stanley Berryhill, and Jameson Williams – were all suspended, the first three “indefinitely, through at least the end of the 2023 season, for betting on NFL games during the 2022 season.”
Berryhill and Williams, who was the Lions’ first-round pick last year, earned six-game suspensions, as their offense was, per the Lions, betting on non-NFL activities while inside an NFL facility.
They are eligible to participate in OTAs and pre-season activities, and will be suspended as of final roster cutdowns in August. The other three are out as of now and can apply for reinstatement at the end of the 2023 season, and the Lions have already released Cephus and Moore.
“We have been made aware of the suspension of Shaka Toney,” the Commanders said in the statement. “We have cooperated fully with the NFL’s investigation since receiving notice and support the league’s findings and actions.”
Toney was a seventh-round pick in 2021, and has 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 26 games.
"A league review uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way," the league said in a statement about the incidents with Toney, Cephus, and Moore.
