What NFL quarterback is most like Sam Howell? That has been the big talk this week and Chris Russell asked Randy Mueller, the former GM of the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins, about the Washington Commanders' second-year quarterback.
"I do know this from a team building standpoint, [Howell] I believe was a fifth-round pick and I did study him coming out and he's played one game. So there would be doubt in my mind, one in how did he end up falling to the fifth round if the skills are of starter quality, so I would have concerns there," Mueller told Russell. "And when I saw him on tape I would concur with those, I didn't see the NFL acumen as far as skillsets physically go. So I understand his strengths may be in processing, his may be in accuracy, and those are vital, too. Sometimes it's not an exact science when we evaluate these guys.
"I think you've gotta give the Commanders a little bit of credit in that they've seen him more than any of us, all we have is the one game and the college film. I'll be honest, Chris, I have my doubts as well. I understand taking a shot, but I think at this stage maybe they feel they have no other options. But this is gonna be, for me, I would wanna wait and see before I put a stamp one way or another, but unfortunately, I think it's a season for the Commanders that they've gotta put up. It's putting a lot of eggs into one basket," Mueller added.
"I don't know, that would make me stay awake at night as a GM, whether I'm Martin Mayhew or Marty Hurney. I don't know if I would be willing to do what they're doing. I understand it, but it's a risky proposition at best, in my opinion."
Russell and Mueller, the current Seattle Sea Dragons director of player personnel, talked XFL, including the XFL Championship game this weekend featuring the DC Defenders and the Arlington Renegades, the NFL schedule release, the draft and more. Listen above.
