Ron Rivera joined John Keim on the latest edition of his podcast, and the Junkies played some of the audio, including Ron’s comments about changing coordinators and the team “having the opportunity to do a pure roster build that leaves the roster in a good position, even if they let me go.”
“The roster is being built, and if I leave, it’s in a good position,” was Rivera’s final quote played.
Is that a good or bad thought, though?
“I actually think what he’s saying is good and responsible in a way,” JP said. “I don’t think he’s giving up. He’s not in control of what a future owner might do, so I think it’s a good attitude that if they’re not happy and want to let me go, dot dot dot, let the chips fall where they may.”
“Yeah, but you could take it for, okay, I did this over the last four years for the next guy to come and take it,” Bish replied.
Cakes’ thought?
“I think it’s him trying to say that if he’s thrown overboard, then if the team ascends, he wants credit because he and the Martys build the roster,” Johnny said. “Whoever takes my place, the reason for your success is that what happened under my watch is finally taking off. It’s a lot of puffing his chest out, intimating it’s a mistake to let him go because the team is about to take off.”
“I’m a Commanders fan and it’s not very encouraging,” producer Valdez chimed in. “This is when you should be most optimistic, and he’s saying we’re in pure roster build mode? Like, what? That rankles me – it’s like putting sprinkles on a turd, it just sounds like he’s a hair away from saying we’re rebuilding.”
“You have to remember, last year he promised something he couldn’t deliver, when he said the third year is where you see the difference,” EB said. “He set the bar and failed, so I think he’s backing off a little bit and being realistic.”
JP thinks it’s a buzzword to make himself feel better about the possibility of being out of a job, EB says “he’s not stupid, he sounds like a guy who totally knows where he is,” and producer Drab basically said “this is a guy who is looking for his next job – nothing until now wasn’t his fault.”
And Cakes?
“If that roster then crashes and burns, then he’ll just disavow and say he was limited by the new owners and did the best with what he had,” Johnny said. “He’s got a lot of excuses.”
“Great, but don’t sell us a bill of goods about how Sam’s our guy and we’re really happy with him, then,” Valdez said, with Drab adding that “you’re rebuilding because you made poor choices, like drafting Chase Young over Justin Herbert.”
Perhaps Johnny Auville, once again, came back in right then with the dagger on Ron’s roster-building extravaganza.
“In my opinion, his philosophy is wrong – he’s building a defense-led team in a league that has never been more offense-centric,” Cakes said. “He’s zigging when everyone is trying to zag…it’s a weird way to build a roster. I give him credit for a new offensive coordinator, but they’ve poured most of their draft capital into defense.”
EB, at least, thinks overall, “it’s a pretty good offense outside of the question at quarterback,” to which JP replied that “if Aaron Rodgers came to the Commanders, you might be talking about them as a contender.”
