After scoring four touchdowns to open last year, Washington Commanders wide receiver Jahan Dotson expects big things in his second year in the NFL.
"Four touchdowns, first four games. I felt like I had to make them respect me. I felt like I wasn't getting the respect that I needed. I had to make them respect me. So this year, I feel like I gotta come crazy," Dotson said recently on the 2nd Wind podcast. "Honestly, I feel like this is my breakout year. It's what I've been working hard for, and I've got to make them feel me."
Dotson had only three touchdowns in the weeks after his fast start in his debut season, he did miss several games due to injury and finished the season with 523 yards on 35 receptions (on 61 targets) and seven scores.
But Scott Jackson, in for Kevin Sheehan, likes to hear this kind of confidence from the young wide receiver. "I hope he has a breakout year, I would be concerned if he didn't feel like he was gonna have a breakout year," Jackson said. "Now I can see how [Sheehan] would probably be very upset to hear this, that they're talking in these big terms and promising these things, but that's the way I want my players to be wired."
Dotson also talked about working in new OC Eric Bieniemy's offense: "It's gonna be exciting. That's the one word I keep using... It's gonna be exciting, OTAs was fun. You get the joy of tossing the ball around with all these different guys we got, spreading the ball around field. Its exciting and we getting our playmakers in space. That's the biggest thing. We're getting the ball in guys' hands and letting them do what God made them to do."
Of the more 'controversial' takes is Dotson saying the partnership he forms with Terry McLaurin puts them "right at the top" of wide receiver duos in the NFL.
And on quarterback Sam Howell ("that's my dog, man") he had this to say: "People sleep on him, but I don't know why 'cause he has all the talent in the world. It's crazy to just be able to throw with him every single day and realize that he puts the ball in a lot of places that a lot of quarterbacks can't. So it's really cool to be able to work with him."
Jackson's take on the confidence of Dotson: "I get it and I like the optimism, the swag, and all that stuff, but yes, production is important, and... his career is just starting."
Producer Denton Day's take: "I like when guys do this a bit, not a lot, but a bit. I don't think he's completely far off when it comes to best duos but I don't think they're the best corps... probably like six or seven, maybe."
Plus, Jackson and Day get into a conversation about Curtis Samuel's production (or lack thereof and if that is worrying) and the entire Commanders' wide receiver corps.
