Ben Standig joined us on air in DC once again Friday, joining Kevin Sheehan on The Team 980 for some more thoughts on the pending sale of the Commanders to a group led by Josh Harris.

And one of the big topics was the fact that even D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser Tweeted something seemingly celebratory about the Commanders no longer being owned by Snyder – and how that may help move forward the stadium conversation, especially around the RFK area land.

“I think now, all the parties will be engaged to at least have the conversation,” Standig said. “It was getting comical toward the end that even Virginia, the last ones to be aggressive, decided to pass. Now, though, I think Bowser wants the team back in the city, and everything is on the table. Now it’s more of a standard conversation – can we get the RFK land? Can we build more around it to make more money for the team? If that doesn’t happen, what do you do, go back to Landover?”

Maryland is putting a billion dollars in retail and commercial construction into the area around FedEx Field, so a new stadium around there could be a possibility, but DC still seems like the best option.

“There’s the land, and you’re buying that as part of the whole investment, so maybe that’s a happy medium-type middle ground, whereas Virginia…there’s a lot of wealth out there and more land, but it’s the furthest away from the Beltway, so it’s the least attractive option. But either way, removing Snyder from the equation, at a minimum, has this conversation and many others back to the normal aspect of it.”

Standig also weighed in on winning back fans, how the new ownership will affect football operations, and more – take a listen!
