Sam Fortier of The Washington Post is one of the pre-eminent reporters on not just The Commanders, but the NFL at large, and he joined Kevin Sheehan Tuesday in what he said was a “little disorienting” segment because it wasn’t early in the morning.
But once the time change was reconciled, Sheehan asked Fortier point blank about the Commanders’ sale situation, which is still up in the air despite multiple bids being known.
“My colleagues are running point on our coverage, but what we know is that two $6b bids have been submitted, and it may be a matter of choosing which bid they like,” Fortier said. “But, do you re-submit bids, or is that kind of a smoke signal to Jeff Bezos to come in with a “Godfather” offer if you want to take this team.”
Sheehan hopes an announcement of something – a letter of intent, exclusive negotiations, something like that – is coming soon, but Fortier has no idea on the timing.
“It would make sense logically once the bids are submitted, what else is left?” Fortier said. “Either you have to pick or wait around for a bigger offer, but I don’t anticipate something big happening like that. But in terms of time, I don’t have a good sense of where that is.”
Fortier is confident, though, a sale is still coming, even if you have to consider Daniel Snyder changing his mind is always an option, at some point.
Whomever buys the team will possibly have a quarterback controversy to deal with, however, as Ron Rivera said last week, after praising Sam Howell, that if Jacoby Brissett gives the team the best chance to win, then Brissett will be the starting QB for the Commanders.
Was this posturing? A kick in the pants, so to speak, for Howell? Or, something else?
“I think it will be a legit competition, but when we talk about Ron talking about his quarterbacks, we have to keep in mind two similar but distinctly different things he said,” Fortier said. “He’ll say we believe in Sam Howell and have the utmost confidence he can be a franchise QB, but he’ll also say he’s not afraid to start Jacoby Brissett. They may sound contradictory, but it’s indicative of how they will do whatever it takes to win the most games in 2023, because Ron knows he needs to have a good audition for the new owner, but they’re thinking long-term, too.”
Fortier also discussed Eric Bieniemy’s arrival, Commanders Draft strategies, and more – take a listen above!
