Robert Griffin III said as recently as this offseason that he has gotten a little bit of NFL interest since retiring.

And if the Washington Commanders called, he says he’d at least pick up the phone and chat.

Griffin effectively has called it a career, pivoting to being an analyst for ESPN. He has repeatedly left the door open to coming back if an opportunity came along, and one of those chances theoretically could be in Landover.

Not only has Carson Wentz been periodically ineffective this season, but he also just fractured a finger and could be out as long as six weeks. The Commanders can turn to Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell in the interim, but if either one of them gets banged up, the Commanders will need another quarterback.

Asked in his weekly appearance on “The Sports Junkies” if he’d entertain the gig, the former Washington signal-caller said he would.

“I would entertain coming back, and here’s the reason: I love football, but two, I actually have a really great relationship with Sam Howell," Griffin said. "To me, coming back to play is, yes, you want to come back and you want to be a starter, but if there’s an opportunity to go in and mentor a young guy that I have a relationship with, that's something I would cherish.

“Sam has been great with me over the course of coming into the league as a rookie, being able to talk to him and really help him in certain instances with how to see the game and how to approach everything. I would entertain that. That would be more about Sam Howell than it would be about the Washington Commanders.”

Griffin hasn’t played in the NFL since 2020 with the Baltimore Ravens. Crazy things have happened in the NFL, and Griffin coming out of retirement and joining Washington of all teams would be quite the storyline.
