Kevin Sheehan DESTROYS dissenter who says Sam Howell is "the next Tom Brady best-case, Kirk Cousins worst-case"

Sam Howell could be the next Tom Brady? Hey, to be fair, no one saw then sixth-round pick Brady becoming part of the GOAT convo 25 years later, but maybe that seems a little bit of a stretch?

Maybe, but Kevin Sheehan opened his show Wednesday talking about Howell, as he got a Tweet from Gabe imploring Kevin to stop talking about Howell’s draft status, because he is “the next Brady best-case, Brock Purdy or Kirk Cousins” worst case” – and yeah, Kevin had a field day with that.

“Come on man, Brady? I can’t tell if you’re kidding or not, but there are a lot of people who are delusional and serious about some of the conversations we’re having about preseason games. Can we take Brady off the table with that one already?” Kevin laughed. “And, how DARE you compare Howell to Cousins as a worst case? If Howell turns out to be Cousins, we’ll sign up for that right now, because your worst case is still pretty good.”

Sheehan isn’t completely sold on Purdy just yet, but Howell being a more mobile Cousins, sign him up – but he agrees about the whole fifth-rounder thing.

“I don’t care about Sam Howell’s draft status in the way some of you think I care,” he said. “Draft status is not a part of forming an opinion on Sam Howell now. His draft status is something I’ve discussed, but it’s been discussed in the context of ‘it just doesn’t happen much.’ A Day 3 QB developing into a legitimate NFL starter is rare. Dak Prescott, Kirk, and Purdy is the list since 2010, and Tyrod Taylor has also started some games. That’s it.”

The Taylor case (along with guys like Matt Barkley and A.J. McCarron) show that late-rounders can be long-term functional NFL players if not good starters, but there are a lot more Dan LeFavour and B.J. Coleman types in those rounds.

So yes, Sheehan says, Howell may be showing now, but let’s hope this is an exception, not the rule.

“There are times where later-round picks, because the investments are so low, don’t get the time and opportunity higher picks do – so maybe, some teams have missed out,” Sheehan said. “But typically, the primary reason it’s a needle in a haystack thing, is that the quarterbacks just aren’t good enough.”

Listen to Sheehan’s entire monologue on the subject, starting about four minutes into the clip above!
