U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren endorse Brandon Johnson for mayor of Chicago.

The two endorsements follow a busy week as other high profile elected officials, unions and political groups have begun showing support for Jonson and Paul Vallas.

“He is not afraid to stand up for strong unions and make big corporations and the rich pay their fair share to invest in affordable housing, quality health care, better schools, and good jobs. Brandon understands the struggle of working people, and is prepared to address them, and that is why I am proud to endorse his campaign for mayor of the city of Chicago,” Sen. Sanders said.

Johnson's campaign has continued to build momentum in recent weeks, but the endorsements from both Sanders and Warren show more force.

“I’m also a former public school teacher, and I can tell you Brandon is the real deal. No other candidate better understands how disinvestment has hurt students and their families — and no other candidate is more committed to fighting inequity in Chicago, first and foremost in the city’s public schools,” said Sen. Warren.

Johnson has also received an endorsement from Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, whose office oversees the consent decree outlining the terms of federal court oversight over the Chicago Police Department.

Vallas was recently endorsed by the Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2, the union that represents Chicago’s firefighters and paramedics.

“Local 2 endorses Paul Vallas for Mayor because he will put the needs of Chicago’s firefighters, paramedics, and all first responders first. We know he understands the challenges our firefighters and paramedics face given his experience in government and as the proud father of a Chicago firefighter,” said Jim Tracy, President of Local 2.

Other endorsements for Vallas include former Secretary of State Jesse White, major unions like Plumbers Local 130, Aldermen Roderick Sawyer, former Mayoral candidates Willie Wilson and Ja’Mal Green and CPS Principal Dr. Joyce Kenner.
