CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Memorial Day Weekend is historically one of the most violent in Chicago, but this year was different.
Violence was down in Chicago over the holiday weekend. Yet, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said there’s nothing to celebrate in the stats.
"One violent crime is one too many," he said. "Over the four-day weekend, Memorial Day, there were four murders, which was the lowest in 10 years...At this point in the year, there has been 4,759 guns recovered by Chicago police officers.
But this is nothing to celebrate, Brown said, "not at all. It's a long summer. There likely, for me at least, won't ever be a celebration. I will never be satisfied. One crime is one too many and I have this very, very far-reaching aspirational goal of Chicago being one of the safest cities in the country, so likely there won't be a celebration coming from me. There's a lot of hard work. There's a lot of obvious things we can do better. We are working on all of that. We are going to hold ourselves accountable."
Brown is calling on judges to increase penalties for gun crimes.
He also thanked civilians doing street outreach and intervention for helping to reduce violence.
