CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The latest phone scam has been targeting north suburban residents. So much so, that the local sheriff’s office has put out an alert.
Some people have been picking up their phones to hear this, "yes this is Sergeant Michael Bennett. I am with the Lake County Sheriff's Office..."
The Lake County Sheriff's Office said those who have responded have found out that the man who claims he’s "Sergeant Bennett" tells his targets there is an active warrant for their arrest – even giving their name and address to make him look more legit. The man then states those answering can satisfy the terms of that warrant by paying-up in the form of gift cards or by providing sensitive information including banking info and social security numbers.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said while they do employ a Sergeant Michael Bennett, it’s not their Sergeant making the calls.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the government will never call and order you to pay money in the form of gift cards. Authorities said if you receive an unsolicited call from anyone requesting money, you should be suspicious and report it.
