CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The faith community rallied around a West Side high school Monday morning after a student was shot to death.

It was a difficult morning for students at Michele Clark Magnet High School, as it was the first day back following the death of Kierra Moore.

The 16-year old, who was considered to be a rising basketball star, was killed during a drive-by shooting in Lawndale last week.

“I know these kids are traumatized. I know they are just in another place having to deal with such an awful, unnecessary death of someone who was a leader, and who had a pathway out of poverty," said Reverend Ira Acree of Greater St. John Bible Church.

Reverend Ira Acree and dozens of other community church leaders stood outside the school offering prayer as students showed up for class.

“We’re here to support them, if it’s just nothing, but standing with them with a smile and letting them know it’s going to be alright," Acree added. "Sometimes there's power in presence just being here to let them know you are not alone. Your community is here for you and you can make it."

Principal Charles Anderson said it's amazing to see support from the surrounding community.

"I’ve seen some students stop and just ask for prayer, I’ve seen my staff stop and just ask for prayer, so this has just been an amazing time for us to have the community be a part of this," said Charles Anderson, Principal of MCHS.

Anderson added that the school crisis team would be on hand for students as well.
