(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In the 2023 Naperville mayoral race, construction company owner Scott Wehrli is leading Naperville City Council Member Benny White by nearly 2,000 votes — with 100% of precincts reporting in Will County and almost 17% reporting in DuPage County.
Incumbent Mayor Steve Chirico announced his retirement in 2022.
White and fellow mayoral hopeful Tiffany Stephens were vying to be the city's first Black mayor.
During the campaign, Wehrli touted his 32 years as a part-time park district police officer and accused White of not being concerned about crime. White, an Army veteran and a son of a former homicide detective, dismissed the criticism and pointed out that Naperville's been judged as one of the safest cities in the U.S.
"We do have crime, still, and we definitely need to address it," he told WBBM in March.
Meanwhile, Wehrli said residents still felt like the social unrest that took place over two years ago felt like only two weeks ago to them.
"We're seeing an inordinate amount of people who are engaging or fleeing … which means they're driving away from traffic stops," Wehrli told WBBM in March.
