CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has received its first infusion of federal funding as it works toward electrifying its bus fleet.

The Federal Transit Administration has awarded the CTA close to $29 million in grant funds for the purpose of fully accessible, all-electric buses.

It comes months after the agency announced plans to convert to a fully electric bus fleet and bus operational infrastructure by 2040.

The CTA’s bus fleet comprises over 1,800 vehicles. Officials said successfully converting to an electric fleet will require significant electrical power upgrades in addition to new buses and improved infrastructure.

Although a portion of the grant funds will be used to purchase 10 all-electric buses, officials said the majority will go toward upgrading the Chicago Avenue Garage in Humboldt Park.

At present, the CTA has more than 20 electric buses, which have been operating along the 66 route along Chicago Avenue.
