Wheeling trustee asks fellow board members to reject Cook County vaccination mandate

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A village trustee in Wheeling asked his colleagues to reject Cook County’s vaccination mandate during a board meeting earlier this week.

“This whole thing has been crazy,” Wheeling Trustee Joe Vito said, adding that the “heavy-handed” order should be rejected.

“Show me your papers if you want to have a hamburger,” Vito said.

Another trustee, Ray Lang, said it’s like getting dogs vaccinated against rabies.

Vito disagreed.

“People aren’t rabid dogs, Ray. To have a rabid dog running around the street is a lot different than to have an 11-year-old or 12-year-old girl like my daughter sitting in a restaurant next to you when you’re fully vaccinated and wearing an N95 mask,” Vito said.

Lang responded, “I think they just want everyone to be vaccinated,” to which Vito then replied that he understood and suggested that they “put it in the schools and mandate it in the schools” but won’t because “they’re scared.”

Vito also noted Wheeling is in Cook and Lake Counties and that some businesses have the mandate others do not.

Half of the trustees agreed with Vito but Village President Pat Horcher did not and broke the tie, ensuring the village will support Cook County's proof-of-vaccination order for indoor spaces.
