Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Fans coming to Buffalo Sabres games this upcoming season at KeyBank Center downtown will have an easier time entering thanks to new security technology, as Evolv Express is being brought in to screen fans.

Jeff Rinaldo of the Tarian Group says Evolv Express is similar to the metal detectors used at large venues.

"It's designed so that you don't have to divest meaning, that you don't have to empty your pockets, take your keys out, your cell phone, your wallets, like you would at a traditional airport style screening checkpoint," explained Rinaldo with WBEN.

Rinaldo says there's use of AI in these machines.

"The technology's just gotten better at looking for certain types of metal signatures that are common in a firearm, or some type of explosive device," he noted.

Rinaldo does warn, though, about the possibility of some hiccups.

"There's still certain things that could cause a false alarm, per se, but the goal for other technologies like that is for sporting events, concert venues, where we're trying to get a large number of people through the door with the least amount of time in the least amount of intrusion into their privacy," Rinaldo explained.

The Sabres' home opener is Thursday, Oct. 9 against the New York Rangers.
