Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Sources tell WBEN on Thursday that Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) may soon leave Washington, D.C. to be named the new CEO of Shea's Buffalo Theatre. These sources say Higgins to Shea's is a "done deal."
"I've heard the same rumor now for a couple of months, and it does appear that something is in the works and might develop in the near future," said Ken Kruly of Politics and Stuff.
Kruly says Higgins' name has also been bandied about as the next President of Buffalo State University.
While Kruly does not know an exact timetable of what's to come, an announcement is anticipated next week, according to WBEN sources.
With Higgins switching jobs, Kruly says a special election will need to be called by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
"The governor would have 10 days after the official resignation to call a special election," he said, with the actual election happening in the Congressional district 70-to-80 days of the proclamation.
Kruly adds each party would nominate its candidate, with many eyes latching on to State Sen. Tim Kennedy.
"If Sen. Kennedy is selected by the Democratic Party to run, I think he would be a formidable candidate that would have a very strong possibility of being elected, is proven to be a major fundraiser for his own campaigns, and also as a name recognition that would certainly move them along quite, quite well," Kruly said.
There has been no formal comment from Higgins' office.
