Suspect dead after being shot by NYS trooper following pursuit in Buffalo

"The trooper reached into the vehicle and the suspect attempted to leave the scene."

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A suspect is dead after being shot by a New York State Police trooper following a pursuit that began on the NYS Thruway and ended up in downtown Buffalo.

Police say troopers attempted to stop an erratic driver on the thruway beginning near Brant and the driver continued to drive erratically and exited on I-190 northbound. The suspect then exited into the city of Buffalo and the pursuit was terminated.

While patrolling the city of Buffalo, troopers located the suspect, pulled over and talking to bystanders on East Eagle Street near Washington Street.

The preliminary investigation determined troopers approached the vehicle, gave verbal commands and at one point during the interaction with the suspect, a trooper discharged their Division issued firearm at the suspect.

"While interacting with the suspect, the trooper reached into the vehicle and the suspect attempted to leave the scene," said NYSP Major Carla DiRienzo at a press briefing following the incident.

The suspect died at the scene and the trooper has minor injuries.

An extensive investigation is underway and the scene was closed off for hours.

The New York State Attorney General's Office is now leading the investigation, which is protocol for deadly officer-involved shootings.
