Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Two people were rescued from a burning boat on Lake Erie Wednesday morning near Ralph Wilson Park, just 800 meters from the US-Canada border.
The fire filled the air with black smoke, causing a traffic backup on I-190 as onlookers drove by.
The United States Coast Guard responded to the fire around 7:40 a.m. Coast Guard personnel were able to get the two boaters off the vessel and take them to Coast Guard Station Buffalo, two miles from the boat's location, where they received medical care.
The Fireboat Cotter responded to the scene as well, dousing the burning boat before it eventually sank. The Cotter responded following a request from the Coast Guard.
The two people that were rescued were the only people on the boat. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
