Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - It's not the forecast you were hoping to wake up to on this highly-anticipated eclipse day in the Buffalo-Niagara region.
In a word, cloudy.
High clouds moved in during the overnight hours, National Weather Service meteorologist Tony Ansuini tells WBEN. "There are thicker clouds, just upstream, across Ohio and western Lake Erie, that will be spreading across Western New York for the morning and into the afternoon."
Ansuini anticipates significant cloud cover during the time of the eclipse across most of the region. "Certainly not ideal conditions for viewing the eclipse."
Cloud cover conditions can often vary widely across the region, however Ansuini doesn't see a wide opening for much variance in the forecast. There may be some hope, however.
"There could be a window for some overall thinning of the cloud cover, and even some breaks that might develop during the mid-afternoon hours across Western New York."

What will eclipse viewing be like in the Buffalo-Niagara rehion with cloud cover present?
"For Western New York to have a decent view of the eclipse, we're probably going to have to have some luck."

In New York State, Ansuini says the best viewing conditions will be in north-central New York and on into New England.
If you're after a picture-perfect viewing experience, where should you drive? meteorologist Andy Parker suggests going west, not east. West of Cleveland and toward Toledo will have better conditions he tells us.
Even without prime viewing conditions, Parker says the experience will still be memorable. "You will still have the most eerie, darkening experience of your life."
