NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- After a psychiatric evaluation, officials determined that 37-year-old Grafton Thomas is not competent to stand trial.

According to the report, Thomas is painted as a troubled soul, plagued by debilitating mental illness.

A forensic psychiatrist concluded the man accused of the Hanukkah Monsey machete attack is schizophrenic.

Thomas has hallucinations and hears threatening voices.

When he talked about the carnage at a rabbi's home, Thomas offered disorganized thoughts about Jews, temples and cell towers, the report said.

A traumatic incident from his childhood remained sealed in the report.

But officials said that paranoia took hold of Thomas in his 20's, which included hallucinations and compulsive behaviors.

They added that Thomas would wash his hands with bleach.

He was also hospitalized several times.

Thomas stopped taking his medication in the month before the Hanukkah attack occurred.
