Calls came in about the seal around 6:30 a.m. when passersby spotted the marine animal off Woodhull Road in the parking lot of Thrifty Beverage, the Riverhead News Review reported.

Officers watched over the seal until the New York Marine Rescue Center came to take over.

Nearby businesses, including Thrifty Beverage, told Riverhead News Review they do not have security cameras pointing in the direction the seal was found.

It is currently unclear how the seal got to the middle of the highway as well as the condition of the seal’s health.
