TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A man was arrested after the decomposed body of his girlfriend was found in a garbage bag inside their New Jersey apartment, prosecutors announced Wednesday.
David Gibson, 44, of Trenton, was charged with desecration of human remains, officials said.
Authorities said Gibson told investigators that in July, he returned to the Beatty Street apartment they shared and discovered his girlfriend Kirshon Smith unresponsive.
According to court documents, Gibson said he tried to revive Smith but wasn’t able to.
Gibson then said placed his girlfriend's body in their bed where "she remained for approximately 10-14 days," the document said.
Smith’s body was placed into a trash bag and moved it into the closet when the landlord made the discovery while cleaning the apartment on Dec. 23, 2022.
The landlord informed authorities about the remains and said he noticed a foul odor coming from a trash bag and then saw a human skull after he opened it.
Gibson was evicted from the apartment on Nov. 18 and was arrested outside the Trenton Transit Center on Jan. 11, according to documents.
Smith’s cause of death remains under investigation.
